Missionaries Under Cover

For 21 months now, Americans have been engaged in a crash course on Islam, its geography and its followers. It is not a subject we were previously interested in, and the U.S. military in two countries continues its on-the-job training in sheiks and ayatullahs, Sunni customs and Shi'ite factionalism. Yet there is one group that has been thinking -- passionately -- about Muslims for more than a decade. Its army is weaponless, its soldiers often unpaid, its boot camps places like the Queens classroom. It has no actual connection with the U.S. government (except possibly to unintentionally muddy America's image). But in the past few months, its advance forces have been entering the still-smoldering battlefield of Iraq, as intent on molding its people's future as the conventional American troops already in place.

Not for a century has the idea of evangelizing Islam awakened such fervor in conservative Christians. Touched by Muslims' material and (supposed) spiritual needs, convinced that they are one of the great "unreached megapeoples" who must hear the Gospel before Christ's eventual return, Evangelicals have been rushing to what has become the latest hot missions field. Figures from the Center for the Study of Global Christianity at Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in South Hamilton, Massachusetts, suggest that the number of missionaries to Islamic countries nearly doubled between 1982 and 2001--from more than 15,000 to somewhere in excess of 27,000. Approximately 1 out of every 2 is American, and 1 out of every 3 is Evangelical. Says George Braswell Jr., a missions professor at the Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary: "We're having more now than probably ever before go out to people like Muslims."

Legal Rights of Indian Citizens

Subject: Legal rights of Indian Citizen

Legal Rights of Indian Citizens

Salaams to all. On 29th July 2007, KFD (Karnataka Forum for Dignity) conducted a talk on "Legal awareness" at Gurunanak Bhavan. This assumed its importance in the light of Sachar Committee report showing that Muslims form 40% of prison population in India.

A lawyer from Mangalore, Naushad sahab spoke about the legalities involved with complaint, arrest, bail, judicial custody, police custody. He detailed regarding the importance of having the understanding about legal rights of a person. During his talk he mentioned the supreme court judgment which has set guidelines to be followed in all cases of arrest:

1. Police arresting and interrogating suspects should wear "accurate, visible and clear" identification and name tags, and details of interrogating police officers should be recorded in a register.

2. Police making an arrest should prepare a memo of arrest to be signed by a witness and countersigned by the arrested person, giving the time and date of arrest.

3. Anyone arrested should be entitled to have a friend or relative informed of their arrest and place of detention "as soon as practicable".

4. If such a friend or relative lives outside the district, the time and place of arrest and place of detention should be notified to them by police through the Legal Aid Organization within eight to 12 hours.

5 Anyone arrested should be informed of their right to inform someone of their arrest and detention "as soon as" they are arrested.

6. Information about the arrest and the details of the person informed of the arrest should be kept in a diary at the place of detention along with names of police officers supervising custody.

7. On request, anyone arrested should be examined at the time of arrest and any injuries recorded. This "inspection memo" should be signed by the arrested person and the arresting police officer, and a copy given to the arrested person.

8. Anyone arrested should be medically examined by a doctor every 48 hours during detention.

9. Copies of all the documents referred to above should be sent to the magistrate.

10. Anyone arrested should be permitted to meet their lawyer during interrogation "though not throughout the interrogation".

11. A police control room should be established at all district and state headquarters with information regarding details of those arrested and their place of custody displayed on a noticeboard.

He also mentioned about the importance of stating truth regarding the time of arrest when a person is produced before magistrate.

He mentioned two important things to be followed to counter illegal detentions by police.
1. Search warrant
2. Habeas corpus.

It is important to make sure that during the hearing, judge makes a note of whatever important things that are being mentioned by the accused. There seems to be no easy book capturing legal rights in a single book, he advised to contact a known lawyer to get more details about the same at his free time. It would be great if a someone has already compiled these aspects in a book or has got pointers where someone can refer at a single place.

With Best Regards,

Amanulla

The quality of your conversations

Communication is about Conversations and Building Rapport

Alan Barker highlights an oft-neglected aspect that communication is about conversations and building rapport. His book is interesting, refreshing, simple and offers some 'aha' insights.

Alan's piece on rapport building is superb. (Books by Dale Carnegie, Les Giblin and Leil Lowndes too are nice. I am sure that most of you would have read books by these three authors).

Alan Barker's style of writing is such that you enjoy reading his book, and you also get the feeling that Alan is a caring and intelligent author. His writing style makes you feel that he cares for you and that he is keen to help you be more successful.

Surprisingly Alan Barker's super-duper book has a rather boring, dull and cliched title: 'Improve your communication skills'. But the book is different from and better than several books on this topic. It's not at all like: "Oh God, not another book on improving communication skills."

Alan has, in this book, also covered the topics of skills of persuasion, skills of presentation and writing, all in an excellent manner. It is better to purchase and give this book to each participant, rather than give a handout on each of these themes.

I recommend this book:

'Everyday Creativity' - a film by Dewitt Jones

'Everyday Creativity'
Everyday Creativity is a short film about how we all have the ability to make the ordinary, extraordinary. Creativity is often thought of as a phenomenon that is larger-than-life or out of the ordinary. Something reserved for a few "artistic" types.

In Everyday Creativity, long-time National Graphic photographer and Academy Award nominated director, Dewitt Jones, challenges such thinking and shows us that we have the ability to be more creative in everything we do. Using inspirational stories, memorable locations, and stunning examples of his work, Dewitt Jones shows us how an open mind, a solid understanding of our craft and profession, and the willingness to venture beyond what is expected, can change our ability to live more creatively everyday.

You will feel encouraged to apply his simple, yet powerful creativity techniques to all of your everyday challenges. And, without a doubt, your new solutions will mean the difference between just getting by and being successful.

For those keen to know more about this film:
Everyday, we are all presented with the opportunity to come up with the next solution, the next right answer to our problems. Our ability to search for new ideas can mean the difference between success and failure. Everyday Creativity teaches a surprising truth about creativity - that it's not a magical, mysterious occurrence, but a ready tool that enables you to look at the ordinary and see the ... extraordinary.

Everyone is creative. They just might not know it. This film reveals nine key concepts of creativity which can be used by anyone to open their creative mind. The messages in this beautiful and powerful video include:

  • Creativity is a matter of perspective
  • There's always more that one right answer
  • Don't be afraid to make mistakes
  • Learn to break the pattern
  • Re-frame problems into opportunities
  • You've really got to care
  • Train your technique

The best in its genre:
Joel Barker's 'The Power of Vision'
(distributed by StarThrower)

Assalaamu alaikum.

Joel Barker's 'The Power of Vision' is the best in its category. A virtual legend. Very professionally done.

Good for families and institutions too.

After this one, no other management training film appeals as much. Yes, Dewitt Jones' 'Everyday Creativity' too is good. But Joel Barker's 'The Power of Vision' far exceeds in terms of delight, learning and value.
